Prof. Barbara Sturm
Vice President of the Leibniz Association

Barara Sturm is Scientific Director and Chair of the Executive Board at the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) and Professor of Agricultural Engineering in Bioeconomic Systems at Humboldt University in Berlin.
After studying process and environmental engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Konstanz (Dipl.-Ing., 2005), she completed a master's degree in environmental and process engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Konstanz (M.Sc. 2006). She then earned her doctorate with a dissertation on agricultural engineering at the University of Kassel (Dr. agr. 2010).
From 2010 to 2014, Barbara Sturm conducted research at the Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability and from 2014 to 2017 at the School of Agriculture at Newcastle University, UK, and from 2014 to 2020 she was head of the research group “Process and Systems Engineering in Agriculture” at the University of Kassel.
There, she completed her habilitation and venia legendi in agricultural engineering in 2018. Since 2020, Barbara Sturm has been working at the ATB in Potsdam and at the HUB.
She was elected Vice President of the Leibniz Association in 2021 and President of the European Society of Agricultural Engineers (EurAgEng) in 2022. Her research focuses on site-adapted process plants and energy supply concepts, transferable system approaches for resource-efficient food processing, and data management and automation concepts in the areas of post-harvest technology and animal husbandry.
In 2024, she became a founding member of the working group on circular, bioeconomic systems of the International Association of Agricultural Engineers (CIGR).
Barbara Sturm is a member of a number of committees of agricultural science institutions and is involved in several interdisciplinary research projects (e.g., Joint Lab KIDS, InnoHof).
