Dr Martin Mittelbach, LL.M.

Vice President of the Leibniz Association

Martin Mittelbach is Administrative Director of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research – Leibniz Institution for Biodiversity and Earth System Research in Frankfurt am Main. After studying law at the Universities of Münster and Bonn and passing his second state law examination at the Higher Regional Court of Koblenz, he began his career in science management at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Cologne. There, he initially worked as a contract lawyer before becoming Deputy Head of the Executive Board Office and Assistant to the Administrative Director. From 2016 to 2017, he served as Project Coordinator for the ESA Ministerial Council Conference (Lucerne) in the Cabinet of the Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA) in Paris.

From 2017 to 2021, Mittelbach worked as a change manager and head of the administration department at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn. In this capacity, he was responsible for finance, human resources, construction, organisation and information technology, as well as acting as project manager for the successful implementation of the Foundation’s comprehensive modernisation programme. Since 2021, he has been Administrative Director of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research. His appointment was extended early in 2025.

Martin Mittelbach has been admitted to the bar since 2004, specialising in IT and commercial law. In 2006, he completed a Master’s degree in Commercial Law (LL.M.) at the University of Cologne. In 2019, he completed his doctoral thesis in international law entitled: “Der internationale Rechtsrahmen für die Erhebung und Verbreitung kommerzieller Fernerkundungsdaten“ (The international legal framework for the collection and dissemination of commercial remote sensing data) at the University of Cologne. Since 2021, Mittelbach has been a lecturer in geoinformation law at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Martin Mittelbach holds extensive certifications in transformation management as well as in agile and traditional project management. Among other things, he has been certified as a “Project Management Professional” (PMP) and “Agile Certified Professional” (PMI-AcP) by the internationally renowned Project Management Institute (PMI).

Martin Mittelbach has been Vice-President of the Leibniz Association since 2024.
