to start in August 2022.

Description of the project: Aquaculture is the fastest growing sector of food production worldwide, particularly in the last decade. Strict environmental standards are making recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) an increasingly important subsector of aquaculture - especially in Europe. RAS offer several advantages over conventional aquaculture systems. Ozonation of process water in so-called ozone reactors has long been successfully applied in aquaculture to rid water of pathogens and improve water quality. Ozone (O3) is a powerful oxidant that reacts with a variety of substances in seawater to produce a strong disinfectant and nitrifying effect. Unfortunately, the use of ozone in water containing bromides - as seawater naturally is - does not come without problems. In order to take full advantage of ozonation in marine organism aquaculture, research is needed on efficient mechanisms to reduce bromate production or to remove bromate from process water.

Requirements: Applicants should hold a Master or Diplom degree in aquaculture, marine biology, ecology or related fields and should ideally have demonstrated experience in aquaculture and/or marine aquaristics and physiology. Particular focus is on animal handling, Phyto- and Zooplankton culture, data processing and communication with project partners. They should also fluently speak English and German and possess good scientific writing skills. Prior experience working abroad in difficult field conditions is preferred.

Details of position:

Salary will be paid according to the German TV-L EG 13. The post will be filled as a part-time position (2/3 of a full-time position) for three years (subject to approval by the funding organization). ZMT is an equal opportunity employer.
