Topic: Sex-specific regulation of immunoproteasome function

The successful candidate will work in a cooperative project at the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center (RCB) together with the Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) (Prof. Dr. Marcus Altfeld) in Hamburg under joint supervision within the Graduate School “Infection” of the Leibniz Center Infection (LCI). The LCI is a strategic alliance of the North German Leibniz Institutes Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM), the RCB and the LIV. The LCI focuses on global infections and links the complementary research of the three Leibniz institutes: tropical and emerging infections at BNITM, bacterial infections of the lung at RCB and viral diseases at LIV (www.lc-infection.com). The alliance provides a three-year structured graduate program on Infection as an interdisciplinary teaching and training course. It is mandatory to conduct at least 3 months of the research at the cooperating institute.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The immunoproteasome is a specialized inducible type of proteasome which functions in immune cells and protective T cell immunity in infection. Recent evidence demonstrated sex-related regulation of immunoproteasome activity which may contribute to the well-established sexual dimorphism observed in virus and mycobacterial infections. The project aims to unravel the molecular basis of sex-related regulation of the immunoproteasome in order to develop sex-specific diagnostic tools and target the immunoproteasome therapeutically in a sex-related manner. The project is a joint effort of the Meiners lab and the research group of Bianca Schneider on Coinfection at the RCB together with the lab of Marcus Altfeld at the Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) in Hamburg.
