The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz is a non-university research institute within the Leibniz Association. It conducts and promotes research into the historical foundations of Europe in the modern era and is actively engaged in the development of digital humanities (https://www.ieg-mainz.de/en).
The IEG invites applications for a full-time position as
Research Associate (m, f, x) in European Religious History (16th-20th centuries)
to start 1 February 2027. In accordance with the German WissZeitVG the contract is fixed-term and limited to a maximum of five years. The salary accords to German pay grade TV-L EG 13.
Job profile
The successful candidate pursues an individual research project in the field of European religious history. We particularly welcome comparative and cross-border perspectives on religion as a field of knowledge and interaction, including its connections to the non-European world. The post holder’s research activities and publications are expected to contribute to the IEG’s overarching intellectual and methodological framework and help shape its evolving research profile. In addition, they act as mentors for international doctoral fellows, organise academic events and work towards consolidating the IEG’s international network.
Further academic qualification, including relevant teaching at a university, is compatible with this position.
Your profile
- an outstanding PhD in a historical discipline (e.g. history; historical theology/church history; Islamic studies; Jewish studies; religious studies)
- high-quality academic publications in the field of European religious history
- an internationally oriented academic track-record
- very good command of English and German
We expect research staff to participate in outreach and knowledge transfer activities for non-specialist audiences and welcome an interest in the use of digital tools and methods.
