IUF – Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine
The central research mission of the IUF is the targeted and personalised prevention of environmentally induced ageing and associated diseases. To this end, the IUF is investigating the role of environmental factors in diseases, the underlying mechanisms, how they interact, who is particularly affected and how we can counteract the negative effects of environmental factors in detail. The work focuses on the effects of solar radiation, air pollution, selected chemicals and the interaction with climate factors - on the lung, the skin, the central nervous system and the immune system.
An interdisciplinary approach combines scientific expertise in environmental epidemiology, molecular toxicology, molecular ageing research, immunology and, increasingly, bioinformatics and biostatistics. The IUF is also developing alternatives to animal testing. The translation of research results is achieved by advising regulatory authorities and through cooperation with industry.
There are currently 10 working groups at the IUF: seven core working groups, one junior research group, one liaison group with the Institute of Clinical Chemistry at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and one liaison group with the Chair of Immunology and Environment at the LIMES Institute at the University of Bonn. The IUF is linked to several universities in North Rhine-Westphalia through joint appointments, participation in teaching and a variety of cooperations. These are currently the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, the Ruhr University Bochum and the Technical University (TU) Dortmund.
