The Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien (IWM) in Tübingen studies the ways in which digital media influence knowledge and communication processes. It conducts application-oriented basic research to describe the role of digital media in the experience and behaviour of individuals and groups, to predict the effects of media use on human perception and behaviour and to derive appropriate interventions. In doing so, the spectrum under consideration ranges from formal to informal educational contexts. Scientists from various disciplines – notably psychology, communication science, neuroscience and computer science – closely work together at the IWM.
To provide its junior researchers with the necessary qualifications, the IWM has been running a structured doctoral programme with complementary seminars since 2006. The IWM also plays a pioneering role in promoting postdoctoral researchers. The Postdoc Forum was founded in 2021 as a follow-up to the previous postdoc network funded by the Leibniz Association. It serves as an exchange platform for all postdocs and assists both postdocs who are aiming for a career in research and postdocs intending to pursue an application-oriented career with specific offers such as workshops or seed funding for projects.
The IWM is the central contact for national and international partners in the field of technology-based teaching and learning. Launched in 2020, the “Human-Agent Interaction“ network (MAI network) investigates how people interact with artificial intelligence in the context of language. The interdisciplinary projects dedicate themselves to the acceptance of language agents and the effects of their use on human performance.
