The Leibniz Institute for Jewish History and Culture – Simon Dubnow explores Jewish lifeworlds from the middle ages to the present. Its interdisciplinary research adopts a pan-European perspective, further encompassing other spaces of Jewish emigration, especially Israel as well as North and Latin America. The institute is named after the Russian Jewish historian Simon Dubnow and is committed to his secular tradition. He was a cultural mediator between Eastern and Western Jewries. At the DI, Jewish lifeworlds are always viewed in the context of their non-Jewish surroundings, thus highlighting the insights that Jewish history can offer concerning general historical developments.
