The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) is an independent, non-university research institute and has been a member of the Leibniz Association since 2012. Its mission is the scholarly investigation of European history since 1500—a focus that makes it unique worldwide. The IEG conducts academic research on the political, social, religious, and cultural foundations of Europe in the modern era while actively contributing to current developments in the digital humanities. Over the past 75 years, it has evolved into an internationally connected hub of interdisciplinary European studies, collaborating closely with academic institutions across the globe. Researchers at the IEG pursue both individual and joint projects and work with early-career scholars from around the world, whom the Institute supports through its renowned fellowship and guest researcher program. Its research is organized into three core areas—Society, Religion, and Digitality—and brings together historical and religious studies in a distinctive and innovative way.
