Leibniz Association: Europe and International

As a mainstay of the German academic system, the Leibniz Association is also very well connected internationally. Leibniz researchers cooperate with institutions around the world and are constantly expanding their collaborative efforts, both in research and in knowledge and technology transfer. In Brussels, the Leibniz Europe Office monitors developments in research policy and decision-making processes within the European Union at close hand.

The wide range of research subjects and approaches in the Leibniz Association creates an ideal basis for tackling global questions and challenges scientifically. Special collaboration and exchange formats – in the Sections, Leibniz Research Alliances and Leibniz ScienceCampi, for example – facilitate fast and flexible responses to current developments.

The Leibniz Association is involved in international science panels and helps shape global science policy developments. By promoting subject-based and regional formats, it creates space for joint activities involving multiple Leibniz Institutes, thereby strengthening the expansion of their international partnerships.

The institutes of the Leibniz Association also practise international diversity at home. A third of the scientists employed at Leibniz institutes come from outside Germany. As an attractive employer, the Leibniz Association is a magnet for doctoral and post-doctoral researchers from all over the world. Leibniz Junior Research Groups give talented postdocs the chance to set up their own research groups at Leibniz Institutes. Leibniz Institutes can also apply for a distinguished international researcher to be appointed to a Leibniz Chair.
