Leibniz Start-Up Prize

The Leibniz Start-Up Prize supports start-up projects initiated by the Leibniz Association institutions, helping them put their ideas into practice in the preparation and start-up phases. The Prize comes with 50,000 euros and is awarded to start-up projects that demonstrate outstanding achievements in terms of developing innovative, viable business ideas and setting up a new company. The prize money is to be used for the project – to support the review and practical implementation of its business concepts and, in particular, to tackle challenges like entering the market, raising finance and developing a marketing and sales structure.

PROSION developed together with the Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) and the University of Cologne a first-in-class approach to address so far undruggable pharmaceutical targets that are linked with various hard-to-treat diseases through a platform of chemical building blocks called ProMs.

Tailoring efficient microscopic systems simply and in just a few steps – this is the goal of the optical construction kit openUC2 (You. See. Too). Dr. Benedict Diederich, René Lachmann and Barbora Maršíková from the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) were able to convince the jury of the Leibniz Association’s Start-up Prize with their modular concept, which allows optical tools to be created in the blink of an eye, tailored to the respective research question.

HyPhoX enables the analysis of liquids such as water, urine or blood to detect viruses, bacteria, toxins or proteins. With the help of photonic sensor, the analysis results can be evaluated on site and in real time. Specific areas of application are in medicine, for example to detect Covid-19 using an antibody test or in hygiene monitoring to dectect legionella in water analysis. HyPhoX is a spin-off from Leibniz Institute for High Performance Microelectronics (IHP).

Many disinfectants claim to be extremely effective. However, not all of them work equally quickly and against pathogens of all kinds. Especially in the field of hand disinfection, there is yet no disinfectant that can eliminate bacteria and viruses as well as bacterial spores. Thus Sporosan®, a product of the spin-off from the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP), is the first full-spectrum hand disinfectant. Furthermore it is suitable for the reprocessing of medical devices and surface disinfection.

Phytoprove develops, manufactures and distributes equipment for rapid, non-invasive plant analysis and provides scientific plant diagnostics services to researchers and private sector clients. The early detection of stress due to lack of water or nutrients, heat, cold or salinization of the soil allows targeted countermeasures for the preservation of trees, for the restoration of plant vitality and need-based watering and fertilizing. Both monetary and environmental losses are reduced. Phytoprove is a spin-off from Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center.

Coldplasmatech’s business idea is a physical plasma product for the treatment of extensive chronic wounds that are currently difficult or impossible to treat. Coldplasmatech is a spin-off of the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP) in Greifswald.
