What Future for Development Through Trade?

The development promise of global supply chains is becoming more uncertain as geopolitical tensions and geoeconomic fragmentation reshape trade and investment flows. This GIGA Talk examines whether, and under what conditions, global supply chains can still support structural transformation, productive employment, and inclusive growth in developing economies. It highlights both the opportunities created by shifting production networks and “connector” strategies, and the risks associated with greater policy uncertainty, unilateral trade measures, and dependence on narrow export markets and foreign firms with weak domestic linkages. By bringing together recent research and policy perspectives, the discussion asks how governments, firms, and development partners can make supply-chain integration more resilient and development-oriented through diversification, credible trade and investment regimes, and stronger local capabilities and social protection schemes for workers exposed to external shocks.
