Section “Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Engineering”

New technologies and materials are essential drivers of economic progress
in a modern industrial society. They safeguard our standard of living and
lay the foundations for meeting future challenges — such as the energy
transition, digitalisation, modern global communication networks, climate
change, or an ageing society. The Section “Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Engineering” of the Leibniz Association is ideally positioned to address challenges such as these in an interdisciplinary manner and to offer flexible solutions.

It not only conducts excellent research, but also provides the necessary information infrastructures, technology platforms, and venues for scientific exchange. This includes developments at the interface of physics, life sciences, materials science, and engineering that open up new options in the future fields of energy, health, and sustainable production, and forge new value chains. Its institutes complement fundamental research at the highest level with application-oriented topics through to tested products. Efficient concepts for knowledge and technology transfer facilitate the translation of research results — for example in the medical field, in energy, climate and environmental technology, or in the mobility and microelectronics sectors.
