Konnichiwa - Guten Tag!

We are travelling across Japan to renew and expand partnerships with universities, research organisations, government agencies and industry. Our goal is to connect Japanese stakeholders with the 96 institutes of the Leibniz Association and explore opportunities for joint research, talent exchange and innovation.

Our Visit to Japan

In September and October 2025, we will be visiting Japan with a Leibniz delegation of lead researchers from Life and Natural Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Environmental Research, Economics and Humanities.

About Leibniz

The Leibniz Association connects 96 independent research institutes that range in focus from natural, engineering and environmental sciences to economics, spatial and social sciences and the humanities. Leibniz Institutes address issues of social, economic and ecological relevance.

They conduct basic and applied research, including in the interdisciplinary Leibniz Research Alliances, maintain scientific infrastructure, and provide research-based services. Leibniz institutions collaborate intensively with universities as well as with industry and other partners at home and abroad. The Leibniz Institutes employ around 21,400 people, including 12,170 researchers. The financial volume amounts to 2,3 billion euros.

International Collaboration

The Leibniz Institutes collaborate with international partners from over 140 countries. The Leibniz Association's international presence and collaborations are as diverse as its institutes — for instance, in addition to institutional and project collaborations, there are partner locations and research stations abroad, for example in Antarctica, the USA, Senegal, Peru, Bolivia, Indonesia, Madagascar and Ghana.

Japan is a long-standing partner for the Leibniz Association. Currently more than 40 percent of Leibniz Institutes throughout all Leibniz sections collaborate with higher education institutes, research institutes, and industry partners in Japan.

There are diverse funding opportunities and schemes that can help strengthen and expand research collaboration between Japanese and Leibniz research institutions. On the Germany side, for instance, there are funding programs for short- and long-term research stays offered by the DAAD (e.g. PPP Joint Research), bilateral cooperation by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) or strategic calls by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. This guide provides more information on research funding opportunities in the EU and Japan.

Institutionally, the Leibniz Association offers talented young scientists attractive research conditions through its Leibniz Junior Research Groups funding programme: scientific independence, competitive facilities and excellent networking opportunities. With the Leibniz Programme for Women Professors the Leibniz Association has created a funding programme within the Leibniz Competition aimed at women in all disciplines who have an outstanding international track record.
